Switzerland 2012

February 9, 2012

What do you do when you love skiing and snowboarding and most of the North American mountains are starving for snow? Well, you gather up 27 friends (and friends of friends) and head to the Swiss Alps! I used to spend my summers in the village of Gimmelwald and spent one amazing winter as the stereotypical ski bum there. It was always a dream to return and ski those mountains again and ten years this winter, I did. A group of us rented out a hostel in the car free town of Gimmelwald and proceeded to ride and party our brains out. Luckily for us, the Inferno Ski Race wrapped up right before we got there so we ended up basically having the entire mountain (and town) to ourselves. While Colorado, Tahoe, and the East were hurting for snow, the Alps were experiencing their best snowfall since 1999 and we hit it perfectly.

Rode powder almost everyday, experienced some good old Euro apres action, sledged, curled, saw some avalanches, ate way too much cheese, saw some old friends and even cut a rug at a small (and I mean small) disco… If you love skiing/snowboarding a winter trip to the Alps is a must. While the snow might not always be the greatest, the history, culture, and mountains are why you go. Your legs will be burning after finishing your day with a 6,000 vertical foot run to the base…..

Much of this trip will serve as a base for my upcoming show this coming September at Slingluff Gallery in Philadelphia. Part II covering Chamonix and Zermatt coming soon….
