A few things going on at Part Time Studios.
“PHILADELPHIA”
A solo exhibition by former member, AJ Rombach
Since moving here, August 2010, I’ve been struck by the nature of the city: its subcultures, its layout, its people and its movements. Daily, the dramatic juxtaposition of decay and rebirth stops me mid-commute, constantly challenging what I consider to be normal to find in an American city in the 21st century. You can expect to see a body of work largely representational, although not completely, of scenes uniquely “Philadelphian.” These are moments belonging to my own personal experience in the last 4 months; they are from my kitchen, my rollerblade commute, a day at the museum or an interesting encounter. My hope, however, is that this show transcends my own experience and feels familiar to residents and visitors alike. It is a show that investigates appropriation, site specificity and the role of the illustrator as a sort of historian, a recorder of time. So please join me May 4th at Part Time Studios for the opening of PHILADELPHIA, A Painting and Drawing Show by Aj Rombach.
A.J. Rombach grew up in the small, coastal community of Marblehead, MA. She began painting in 1998 at a local gallery and school, Acorn Gallery. In 2006, she was accepted into the Boston University College of Fine Arts program. After receiving her BFA, she relocated to Philadelphia. In May of 2011, she painted a mural outside of Puriscal, Costa Rica—an experience that would encourage her to tour the USA painting murals. Her first mural gift was given to Philadelphia on E. Harold Street, a neighborhood in Port Richmond, she painted the city skyline as seen from the Philadelphia Art Museum. September 2011- November 2011, Rombach went on to paint murals for New Orleans, Santa Fe and Minneapolis before returning to the Philadelphia. Most recently, she showed “SPACES”, a painting and drawing show, at CSA GALLERY (1818 Callowhill.) Her work formally investigates color, space, light and form, & contextually explores decay and rebirth. She lives and paints in Kensington.
